Shark Fishing on the Texas Coast – Tips?

We’ve recently dipped our toes into shark fishing and wanted to reach out to the community for some tips and insight. Yesterday, we hit up the Six Mile pier and chummed the water using a mix of mackerel and anchovies in a mesh bag. Ended up catching some gafftop over 14" that we filleted down to the heads—makes for some solid blacktip bait from what we’ve heard.

We actually saw a shark out there on Saturday, which got us wondering:
When’s the best time to target sharks on the Texas coast?
Are we looking for certain tides? Moon phases? Water temps?

Also curious about how to really stack the odds in our favor—whether that’s bait presentation, rigging tips, or preferred pier/beach setups. We’re eager to learn and level up our game. Any advice from the seasoned shark anglers in here would be appreciated!

Tight lines,
– Michael
