Fishing Report – Port Lavaca (April 17, 5:30–11:00 PM)

Conditions: SE wind 20mph | Incoming tide | Solunar inactive

We kicked off the evening around 5:30 PM at the Matagorda Bay Fishing Cooperative, linking up with the crew from Vast Overland. They already had lines in the water, and after a few laughs and catching up, it was time to get serious.
Fishing into a stiff 20mph southeast wind made things tough, even with the tide moving in. Action was slow and mostly limited to gafftops and hardheads. Our strategy was to fish the top of the 13ft drop-off, soaking squid while the tide pushed in.
As the sun started to dip, we made the call to chase something bigger.

After a quick pit stop at Buc-ee’s and a bait blessing from Jose at PoBoy’s, we headed to the pier with blue crab in hand and black drum on the brain.

The wind finally started to die down a bit—just in time.

I rigged up a double drop with half live crab, size 7 circle hook, on my Shimano 12’ rod with an Ambassador 6500 spooled with 30lb braid. And just like that—drag started ripping.

With some teamwork, hoots, and hollers, we brought a massive 38” black drum (easily over 40 pounds) up onto the pier.

Sometimes it’s about waiting for the right moment—and last night, that moment showed up after dark.
