Best combo a question for all?

What is the best combo for bank fishing? I use a spinning combo of a 500 series shimano reel and a 6.5 ft 2 piece med fast rod. What does everyone else use?

Great question, I use a Shimano Curado 200G7 and a 6’-9” medium Fishing Tackle Unlimited “Green Rod”. I like the rod a ton and actually saw a couple come up on FB marketplace used recently that I have my eye on. The Curado 200G7 is ok but I am on the hunt for an older 200E7 which had a better build than the G.

So you like the bait caster is there a reason you prefer it over the spinning reel and I actually just bought a curado 200EJ but don’t know much about it.

So I like the bait caster because I feel that with the FTU green rod I can really feel the slightest tap. The thing I also like is I can cast it pretty quickly without having to deal with the bell on the spinning reel. My dad however would always use a spinning reel on a light weight Berkley lightning rod for flounder fishing and I think that was because it had more give on the tip. So I keep the same setup with a smaller shimano 1000 spinning.

I almost never pull out more than one rod at time or set a rod up unattended because I really prefer to fish with just one at a time.

Hey Eddie if you have a picture or avatar you want used for your profile just post it and I will crop it to the avatar size for you.

Really loving this hobby

Thanks guys. I want to try ultra light, is Berkeley the only brand you recommend or are the ugly sticks better for the money. What size reels would you pair the ugly stick with?

One of the ultra light combos that we have had for a while has been a Shakespear Ugly Stick combo. I think we picked it up for around $55 at Academy back when I bought it. It has worked well for years.

For throwing lures I would go with a 2000-3000 size reel. I like to stick with shimano or penn. but lews has some nice stuff too. Then match it with a rod you like the feel of. I like a light action spilt grip. But some people would rather a full cork. That’s just your preference.

For bait chunkin. You can’t go wrong with a used abu Garcia ambassador paired with an ugly stick. It’ll be the most versatile combo you’ll have. Fresh water for catfish. Saltwater for everything from the bank or pier.

I’ve been extremely happy with a Shimano 12ft Speedmaster paired with an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500. Definitely not a finesse combo, but when I need to bomb bait out past the sandbars, it gets the job done every time. I do keep a 7ft Waterloo Ride Series handy for working closer in or throwing artificials, but when it’s time to soak bait from the bank, that long rod and conventional reel combo is hard to beat.
