Specks on Fire at Port Lavaca – Saturday Night Report

Hit Port Lavaca pier Saturday night with just a speck rig tied up and an umbrella rig I was curious to test out. Didn’t bring a cooler full of bait—just a couple of rigs and the hope something would be biting.

Right out of the gate, the speck rig (2” soft plastic shads) was getting slammed. I was into fish all night—nonstop action from around 10 PM to 1:30 AM. Most were in that 11–13” range, a full-on nursery of trout under the lights. Every cast felt like a chance, and the double rig made for some fun hooksets.

I gave the umbrella rig a try, but not even a nibble. Looked cool in the water, but the trout had no interest—guess they wanted something small and frantic.

Around 2:15 AM, the clouds finally moved off and the moon lit up the bay. The bite slowed, but the night got beautiful. There’s something about that pier energy at 3 AM—people you don’t know offering advice, watching each other’s rods, sharing stories and snacks. Felt like being part of a little outlaw community.

Just before I packed it in, I got the bite I’d been hoping for. Not a monster, not a gator, but a legit 15” speckled trout with a different kind of pull. That fish felt like a sign the night was complete.

I always say my favorite part of fishing is catching fish—but honestly? I think it’s being part of that quiet crew of night anglers chasing silver in the dark.

Anyone else out Saturday? Curious if that bite held into Sunday morning.

Tight lines and respect,
—Michael
