Got out to Port Lavaca last night for a late-night trout run. Hit the pier around 10 PM and stayed out until about 3 AM. At first, the clouds had the moon completely covered—but around 2:30 AM, they finally cleared, and the whole bay lit up. Felt like someone flipped a switch.
We were surrounded by trout almost the entire time. You could hear them popping and chasing bait all around us. Threw a speck rig with some soft plastic shads—tons of hits, but a lot of short strikes. Landed 11 trout total, but every one of them measured around 12”. No keepers this round, but we released them all healthy.
What made the night was the vibe. Perfect weather, cool breeze, no drama. Just laughing with your best friend and making memories under a glowing moon. You really couldn’t ask for better.
Noticed:

Noticed:
- Water clarity was decent, baitfish were thick.
- All action came from the middle section of the pier, casting out toward the deeper drop.
- Every trout seemed juvenile—wondering if we’re right in the middle of a hatch cycle or nursery area.
Tight lines,
